1/6/16 George Frederick Handel
Music for the Royal Fireworks
As we study the “spiritual lives of major composers,” we listen to their music and discuss it. I asked Matteo to close his eyes and describe the first part of this piece of music. The adjectives he chose are as follows:
MAJESTIC, GRAND, DECLARATIVE, HAVING RESPECT
Then I asked him again to close his eyes and write a poem about the picture that is in his mind as he listens…
THERE HE STOOD IN ALL HIS GLORY
THE ONE WHO LOVED SO PURE.
HIS PURPLE LIGHT IN ALL IT’S SPLENDOR
AND MY SOUL REDEEMED, FOR SURE.
REVERENTLY, I LISTEN
AS EACH NOTE MAKES IT’S POINT.
THE SOUNDS FILL MY BODY
AS NO OTHER SOUND COULD.
HALLOWED BY THY NAME
LET THIS WORLD KNOW,
YOUR LOVE REIGNS STILL
I LOVE YOU SO.
Part II of this piece gets more lively…
Adj: RUGGED, HAPPILY EXCITED, PERSISTANTLY ROWDY, FANTASY AT IT’S FINEST
I SEE THEM RUNNING FREE AMONGST THE REDWOODS,
THE AIR SO CRISP AND FILLED WITH THE PLAYFUL, HAPPY ENDURANCE OF THE HUMAN RACE.
THEY CALL FOR US TO RUN WITH THEM IN HARMONY AND PEACE.
THEY ARE THE SOULS OF THOSE WE LOVE,
WHO SPEAK TO US FROM HEAVEN THROUGH MOTHER NATURE’S BEAUTY.
LET US ALL JOIN TOGETHER IN THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE.
FOR IT IS TRULY A GIFT FROM GOD, AS IS THE LIFE EVERLASTING.
